Covid was an unexpected bump in the road and in the life of my blog as well, and though it still is, places are re-opening in Edinburgh and travelling has resumed to some extant, I thought this might be a good time to get back to some of my local recommendations.
Edinburgh has a lot of lovely local bakeries that are basically about coffee and sweet treats, and as Edinburgh is a rather vegan friendly city, many of them offer vegan options as well. So here is a short list of my favorite places in town:
In a way, I have already posted about this bakery in my blog when I told you about Lovecrumbs, as Nice Times Bakery is actually their supplier. However, since blogging about Lovecrumbs, Nice Times Bakery have opened up their bakery to the public, serving some baked goods and coffee. Their newly opened cafe is located in Haymarket (in Edinburgh’s West End) and is all pretty and pink. Sometime in May Nice Times Bakery has opened a little hatch for takeaways, and they have just opened for sit ins over this last weekend! Pop by for an amazing peanut butter chocolate (vegan) crinkle, a (vegan) cinnamon bun or one of their vegan cake loaves (changes daily). Come get your sweet treat and coffee from Wednesday to Sunday between 10:00am – 3:00pm.
This amazing little bakery in Newington probably has the loveliest looking counter in town. Bakery three.14 is a not only a lovely local business, but it’s also a one woman’s show, offering tons of baked goods daily as well as some ethical coffee from the local Williams & Johnson Roastery. While the selection changes daily, everything is really tasty, with my vegan favorite (a recurring treat) – the banana biscoff loaf. While bakery three.14 offers a variaty of cakes and pastries, there is usually only one vegan option. That been said, if you happen to be in the neighborhood and are in need for a caffeine fix as well something sweet, it is very much recommended. As of now sitting is not available, but you can go crab your coffee and dessert from Wednesday to Friday between 8am-4pm, and between 10am-4pm on Saturdays.
Cukoo’s Bakery is a small local chain, with three different locations across Edinburgh. It is well known for it’s cupcakes, which include quite a few vegan options. Though I love muffins, I tend to not like cupcakes, their top is often too sweet and too artificial tasting for my liking. This resulted in the fact that I have actually never tried any of their vegan cupcakes. However, I have tried some of their other vegan delights, and I am happy to report that they are absolutely delicious. My favorite is their rocky road, with peanut butter and some Oreo chips. Cuckoo’s Bakery is now open daily for takeaway as well as sit in, in Cannonmils, New Town and Bruntsfield, between 10am-3pm.
Mimi’s Bakehouse is another local small chain here in Edinburgh, it has become quite a chain now, with four different locations across town. Along side their great variety of cakes, they offer vegan treats daily, and though there is some variety, the most popular vegan treat is their biscoff brownie, which is almost always in stock. With double chocolate and some biscoff drizzle on top, this moist brownie is definitely a must. All four locations are now open for sit ins as well as takeaway – City Art Centre (Old Town), Royal Mile (Old Town), Leith and Corstorphine – between 9:30am to 17:00pm.
Sugar Daddy’s is actually a 100% gluten free bakery, however they do offer quite a few vegan options as well. This diner-style bakery, is definitely a very sugary, pastelic one! My favorite vegan treat is their super moist brownie, which basically melts in your mouth. Other options are sandwich cookies, cupcake and more. While Sugar Daddy’s used to have two locations, unfortunately, one of them has closed down due to Covid, and they only have the Marchmont location. With that been said, if you happen to be in the area and are craving something sweet, you should definitely go pay them a visit, from Wednesday to Sunday 10am-4pm.
Hope you are having a sweet weekend!
