These are weird, difficult times for us all and as many of my favorite coffee shops in Edinburgh are still delivering / open for take-away, I might post about that in order to support them in the following days. But before I do that, I am going to dedicate this post to a heart-warming phenomenon I have been seeing on Facebook / Instagram since this quarantine started.
As a Pilates instructor and yoga and dance teacher, I obviously have quite a few friends and acquaintances who are also some sort of physical activity instructors. I would even say that at least a third of my friends on Facebook are teachers, and still, the amount of them that started to live-stream their classes is quite amazing. Most of them are either doing it for free, on a donation basis, or charging a symbolic amount. This is truly heartwarming!
Being a fitness instructor is extremely hard. It often times means you are free-lancing, hopping from one studio to the other, your income isn’t steady, you need to commute a lot, you are physically active for many hours, and though the amount of money you make for a class is usually decent, it is impossible to work full-time, since it’s so straining. In fact, 15 hours per week are considered to be a full-time job for teacher, and they are physically and mentally a lot! Now, with all the gyms and studios closed, so many of us have lost our source of income. And yet, I see so many of my friends going to great lengths in order to create a community of practice, and make workouts available for everyone in these difficult times. I find it amazing to see such generosity. It is unbelievable that I have so many class options on my feed, I can’t take all of them and have to choose! It’s also amazing that while I live in Europe, I get to take classes of my teachers back in New York and Tel Aviv, something I haven’t been able to do in months!
I have already joined this trend last Thursday, but now that the UK has forced all the gyms and studios to shut down, I stopped taking classes altogether, and have even more time, which probably means I will be streaming quite a few classes. If you want to join in, feel free to leave a comment here, or email me and I will send you a link.
Stay safe and healthy,
